Audrey and Maude
A story by Grace Mirchandani about complicated and ageless female-female relationships
It starts with a funny little teenager called Heather Nightingale. What a mighty name this quaint character has got to live up to, and we soon learn she indeed has a big legacy to come to terms with. Heather’s journey begins innocently enough. She wants to know more about her roots. She wants to know the family secret. What is the key to her grandmother’s heart? Heather seems to know instinctively that the key lies in the secret. It’s what her grandmother clings to jealously, fearfully, and with so much pain. This secret had to skip a generation to get resolution. The middle person—the mother—was passed over, in a curious pattern that leaves the mother passive in the whole story arc. Coming through the mother, the daughter takes the reins and drives the story. The grandmother holds the key to unlock sisters and aunts. But we’re getting ahead of ourselves. First, we have the mother (not Heather’s mother, but in fact, Audrey’s mother) giving birth and dying. Audrey and Heather (Grandmother and Granddaughter) take turns telling the story of how Audrey raised her baby sister, Maude. Heather sets herself on a mission to learn the truth of what divided Grandmother Audrey and Aunt Maude and how to reconnect the broken pieces. Heather is the generational link who will make the bridge to link these female stories, all from one source and yearning for the mother soil.
